Frequently asked questions

Absolutely! No experience needed to join Cal Skate Roller Derby. Our freshman trainers will teach you everything. You will learn how to stride, stop, fall, and hit in no time! Click here to learn more about roller derby.

  1. You must be at least 18 years old. Not 18? Check out the local junior roller derby league in SLO.
  2. You must wear the following protective gear: (1) helmet, (2) knee pads, (3) wristguard, (4) elbow pads, and (5) a mouthguard.
  3. You must wear quad roller skates. Inline skates are not permitted and can only be worn by referees.

Membership is $40.00 per month and is due on the 1st of every month. New members get their first month free!

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body of women’s flat track roller derby representing more than 450 member and apprentice leagues on 6 continents. The mission of the WFTDA is to govern and promote the sport of flat track roller derby and revolutionize the role of women in sports through the collective voice of its member leagues around the world. The WFTDA sets the international standards for rankings, rules, and competition each year and provides guidance and resources to the sport of flat track derby.

The WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirement are the minimum skills required for gameplay. Click here for a full list or check out these videos.

To skate in a bout you must pass the minimum skills test and the written WFTDA test. In addition, you have to participate in 3 scrimmages and complete your Non-Skating Official (NSO) training. Passing these requirements can take anytime from 3 to 12 months, depending on your experience and commitment.
